Psalm 1

Like a Tree

a hymn with refrain

Refrain

Like a tree by the flowing water,

             growing deeper, stretching high

Like a tree by the flowing water,

connected to the source of life

Verse 1

Blessed, blessed are we to abide in God’s Word,

Nourished through every season; blessed are we.

Verse 2

Planted, planted by grace, we are rooted in God’s design

Freely, freely abiding, planted by grace

Verse 3

Trusting, trusting our lives to the holy way of God,

We will, we will surrender, trusting our lives.

About the song

The picture in Psalm 1 is of a growing tree, thriving through every season because it has everything it needs: it has been planted adjacent to the very source of life.

The song's verses sing of how our identity is knit into one another.

The refrain sings of the nature of thriving-- growing deeper and stretching higher. Like Jesus' parable of the mustard seed, our roots and branches stretch large for the purpose of service to the world.

The Way of God

a hymn with refrain

Refrain

      The Way of God

      The Way of God

      The Way of God

Verse 1

Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth to die,

it remains only a single seed

But if it's buried deep, it will produce many seeds

Verse 2

Whoever wants to serve me needs to come and follow me

Where I go, of course my servant goes

Those who pour out their lives into the Christ will find life

About the song

Psalm 1.2 is about delighting in God's "law," the beloved TorahThink of it as "holy instruction" or "Way."

Throughout the Hebrew scriptures, a central metaphor for faithfulness is walking a particular path. The refrain of the song names that Way.

the two verses are drawn from the New Testament, words from Rabbi Jesus in the gospel according to John 12.24-26.  In both testaments, this Way means a life of trust, service and strength through surrender.
